The Granville Farm was the home of Thomas Granville Madison’s last Pound keeper and father of the Granville brothers, designers of the world recording (286 MPH) setting Gee Bee racing place.
Taken from the State of New Hampshire historical marker placed in front of the Madison Historical Society in 2007.
“Nearby is the birthplace of the Granville brothers: Zantford (Granny), Thomas, Robert, Mark and Edward and sisters Pearle and Gladys. With Madison natives Hiram Jones, Harry Jones and Elson Ward, they formed the Granville Brothers Aircraft Co. in Springfield, MA, and designed, manufactured and flew notable racing aircraft of the Golden Age of Aviation. In 1932 the Gee Bee Model R-1 set a new world speed record of 296 mph. Their high performance designs represented the cutting edge of technology and dramatically influenced military and civilian aviation.”
Clues: From Rte. 113 at Madison Corner, turn south onto East Madison Road. At .3 mile, turn left onto Pound Road. Follow Pound Road up the hill then turn right onto Maple Grove Road. Follow Maple Grove Road for about .2 of a mile. You will see an old white farm house on the right where Thomas Granville, along with his wife Agnes (Griffith) raised their 7 children. Respect this private property, but do notice the stone monument memorializing the Granville Brothers and their contributions to aviation. Continue following the road till just beyond the cleared field on the right. Notice a white highway marker on a thin metal post. Stand with your back to the metal post facing away from the farm house. Take 12-14 average steps forward looking for a large brown stump on the right side of the road. What you seek will be between the stump and a small tree. Replace it where you found it and cover it with leaves.
