The Stone Monument was built sometime after 1926, the year both Rev. Edward Cummings (ee cumming’s father) and Walter Kennett died. It is said that the monument, while under construction, was ordered taken down and rebuilt after the crew continued to work unsupervised for a day. It has also been said that one foggy night boaters nearly drown while struggling to find the shore which drove the purpose for the monument. This seems a good reason to erect a lighted monument, but I could not get confirmation by “press time” The lamp was not in working order for many years. Sometime in the mid 1980s the lantern was rewired and has been in service ever since.

Find the Stone Monument at the Head of the Silver Lake across from the Silver Lake Train Station on Rte. 113. Starting at the monument facing the lake, walk towards the large white building to your right. Just before the building you will notice a metal rails embedded in a gravel/grassy remnants of the Boston Maine Railroad. Follow the tracks a short way with the lake on your left. You will pass a set of stairs on your left. Keep walking until you see a small yellow diamond shaped sign on the left. Stand with your back against the red octagon symbol and count 4-5 average steps. Look to your left to find the butt end of a tree trunk. Your treasure is at the front end of this horizontal, cut tree trunk. Please tuck the Letterbox back under so it is completely hidden from view.

Hike length: 0.5 miles
