"Ash nazg durbatuluk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatuluk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul!"

This year, 2012, marks the 75th anniversary of the publication of J.R.R. Tolkien's THE HOBBIT. This is the book that tells the story which is at the center of his more monumental work, THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Later this year, the movie will be released in two parts. To celebrate the anniversary, here is a nine-box series of two-sided hand-carved, NOT FOR SHARE, stamps which illustrate the nine riddles in Chapter 5, which I believe is the center of the center of the Trilogy.

the second riddle:

Thirty white horses on a red hill,
First they champ,
Then they stamp,
Then they stand still.

DIRECTIONS: Take RT15 (Merritt Parkway) to Exit 41. Make your way to Nistico's Red Barn Restaurant which is visible from the highway. What used to be a feeding place for four-legged clients is now an elegant dining space for two-leggedses. Plan to bite into their Lunch Menu. I highly recommend their Wild Mushroom Raviolis. (And we all know a hobbit's passionate attraction to mushrooms!) Drive to the end of the lot, and park.

CLUES: Look toward the cell tower which looms over the trees. Walk across the lawn in the direction of the tower, and step into the edge of the woods. Before you come to the fence around the tower, you will come upon a two-sister cedar tree with all sorts of troll-ish debris scattered around its base: strips of rusted iron, chunks of cement, and piles of stones. There is also a fallen lamp post with a block of concrete at one end and a stone stuck into the other end. Remove the stone to find the second RIDDLES BOX hidden in the lamp post pipe. There is a special metallic ink for stamping both sides of the stamp, and a cloth to wipe your fingers. PLEASE SNAP THE INK CONTAINER SHUT COMPLETELY. There is no logbook. Please hide the box well, after you have stamped in.
