From Inland areas of San Diego County: Take I-15 North. A couple of mile after passing HWY 76, take the Mission Road exit. Turn left at the exit towards Fallbrook. Take Mission Road about 5 miles and make a right on Pico. (There is a sign that says "To De Luz Road". Pico turns into De Luz Road. Two Miles after you turned on Pico, you will come to a fork in the road. Go right at the fork onto Sandia Creek Rd and travel another two miles to the trailhead parking lot on the right. If you cross a bridge you have gone to far. The trail can also be reached from Temecula (see the following site for more directions http://www.mountainbikebill.com/smart.htm)
At the parking lot of the Santa Margarita Trail, head south (not the trail across the road). At the first trail marker veer right (don't take the horse trail). Go past a 2nd trail marker. The trail goes over a couple rocky areas. You'll begin seeing the creek on your left. Right after a rocky area you'll see a great view of the creek. There will be a big tree hanging over the creek, continue on going 5 steps from the tree and turn to the right. You'll see a big rock on the hill (10-20 feet up). The box is behind the rock (see picture)! Try to be discreet. If you see a 3rd trail marker you've gone too far. If you have time look for the Belted Kingfisher that hangs out in the area. Have fun!
