"Ash nazg durbatuluk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatuluk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul!"

This year, 2012, marks the 75th anniversary of the publication of J.R.R. Tolkien's THE HOBBIT. This is the book that tells the story which is at the center of his more monumental work, THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Later this year, the movie will be released in two parts. To celebrate the anniversary, here is a nine-box series of two-sided hand-carved, NOT TO SHARE, stamps which illustrate the nine riddles in Chapter 5, which I believe is the center of the center of the Trilogy.

the third riddle:

Voiceless it cries,
Wingless flutters,
Toothless bites,
Mouthless mutters.

DIRECTIONS: RT95 to Exit 30 (South:Surf Avenue, North: Lordship Boulevard) If you are heading south, take a left at the end of the ramp, under the highway, and you will come to Lordship Boulevard.
Alongside of the large storage tanks is a gated road called Eagles Nest Lane. At the end there are Osprey Nesting Platforms. You can only reach them by walking the length of Long Beach. But it is worth the walk to watch these magnificent "sea eagles." The hobbits were thrilled to hear "The Eagles are coming!"

Take Lordship Boulevard in the direction of the Airport (not toward the highway). You will come to reeds and marshy-looking grass. This always means trouble for hobbits. You will see the airport in the distance. When you come to the road dividing, take the left Airport Access Road. This will take you past the Breezy Point Auto Body Shop and will end at Main St. Take a right past the Breezy Point service station. And immediately after you have passed the pumps, TURN RIGHT into the drive that takes you alongside of the service station to the restaurant in the back. Go all the way to the far left corner of the parking lot and park.

CLUES: Exit your vehicle and notice the metal guardrail separating the restaurant lot from the airport lot. Hop the rail and follow it to its end. (You are walking away from Main St.) When you come to the end of the guardrail, look over into the brush and see a rusty gallon barrel and a large peach-colored quartz rock. Next to the rock there are several flat stones. The third RIDDLES BOX is hidden under the stones. There is a special metallic ink for stamping. But no logbook. PLEASE SNAP THE INK PAD CLOSED TIGHTLY. Please hide it well, after you have stamped in.

Before you return to your vehicle, sit on the guardrail and enjoy the gulls gliding and calling, and the airplane motors droaning, and enjoy the nostalgic look of the airplane hangars.
