Hoffman Evergreen Preserve is located on Route 201. If coming from Route 184, it is approximately 1.4 miles on the left from the junction of 184 and 201 heading towards North Stonington. There is parking along the sides of 201. The Preserve trails are all well marked and there are maps available online if you Google “Hoffman Evergreen Preserve Stonington CT”. It is part of the Avalonia Land Conservancy.

To start, enter past the gate and at the first fork take a right for the red trail. You will find many rock walls in the preserve and this trail follows along a rock wall on your right. The blue trail joins the red trail for a bit. At the next sign follow the red trail marker to the right. Continue along and the trail continues through a rock wall at a tree that makes a “V”. The path passes through another rock wall again. Shortly the trail descends and you come to another Preserve sign. Take a right and cross the bridge, still following the red trail passing through a lovely pine forest. Once again you pass through another rock wall and a stream. As you approach yet another rock wall that the red trail passes through and a very wet area, there is a sign for the Mashantucket Land Trust. Continue along the red trail. At the next rock wall that you pass through the trail curves to the left. Instead of turning left, turn right and go into the corner where two rock walls meet. There tucked into the corner you find the “Red Trail Squirrel”.
To return to Route 201 you may either, turn around and go back the way you came or continue on the red trail until you meet up with a blue trial and sign board (point #5) pointing you to Rte 201 on the preserve map. Follow the blue trail and signs for 201.
