The Black Oystercatcher, a common black bird sporting an orange bill, is as common as salt water along the Pacific coast. For more information on this worthy bird, denizen of Point Lobos, go to Wikipedia:

Anyhow, head on over to Point Lobos State Reserve three miles south of Carmel on Hwy. 1.

$12 a car unless you're 62 or older and are authorized receive one of life's little rewards: entrance fee $9.

Once in wend your way to Whaler’s Cove and travel to the north end of the parking area where the short North Shore Trail begins. Walk up the stone steps. Then stay to the left once, stay to the left twice and head up the wooden stairs. At the top of the wooden stairs stop on the last stair going left. Walk about 12 steps and look to your right. There you will note a large boulder and a smaller boulder next to the larger. In the hollow under the spot where the boulders meet reach in behind some bark to find The Black Oystercatcher.

Thanks for coming and when you return the letterbox to its hiding spot please shove it far enough in and back with some obscuring bark and/or pine needles so it’s properly hidden.
