THE OLDEN DAY ROAD NO LONGER USED
In the Cockaponset State Forest in Chester , on the old paved park road that runs from Rt 148 to the Russell Jennings Pond are some fun side trails that have sprung up over the years .
Begin at the large parking lot at the Pond and pass around the yellow park gate . This is a great hike for any wheel ! bikes , carriages or you name it because most of it is on the old park paved road . Two short easy walks off the road to the boxes that will bring out the adventure in you if you choose to continue on and hike the trails .
Walk up on the paved road as it goes up a little hill . Stay on the paved road until you come to a well worn path on the right . It has a blaze of a white triangle and on the tree is a small state sign that marks this as THE QUINIMAY Trail . Turn onto this trail and pass by the Blue/ Red trail intersection . Take the next trail on the right which is un marked . Pass a Beech tree and the trail curves and notice a large Oak tree ,both on the right , and soon a small cluster of Laurel . A little way off the trail [ we climbed over a small fallen tree ] on the right , is a large Beech tree . Box number 1- YOU’LL NEVER FIND THIS AROUND HERE , is hiding behind trap door .
Return back to the paved park road and continue on .
Ignore any side trail you might notice until you arrive at a wide trail on the left side , guarded by many large rocks. Walk along this wide dirt path a short way to small cluster of Laurel . You will see up ahead on the right , a large two sister tree leaning out towards the trail . Go up behind it to a large flat rock and notice the ‘ side kick laurel ‘ against the rock . Box number 2 LOST AND FOUND TWEET is in a small cave under the rock .
Return to the parking lot the way you came , or go on an adventure
Have Fun
