Shaker Lakes Nature Center in Shaker Heights, Ohio
South Park Road

Difficulty: Easy
Time: Less than one hour
Directions: http://www.shakerlakes.org/administrative_staff.htm#Directions

This is our first box, and our first shot at Letterbox Poetry. Please forgive our syntactical stretches :)

Begin at the All People’s Trail – Northwest side of the parking lot. For maps or information, ask at the Nature Center.

*Please Note: Dogs are not allowed on the trails.

----Clues:

Straight ahead, where the trails intersect
The words of a woman ring true
Make note of her letters and count out her words
For soon they’ll be useful to you.

Continue your quest heading North o’er the Marsh
On the lookout for more thoughtful words
Count the words, write them down, read the quote you have found
Regarding the migration of birds.

Follow the boardwalk as it curves o’er the brook
Searching the rail for a quote
Carry on past the “trail to the lower lake”
And record what Carson wrote.

Find 130 degrees and follow that trail
It is here that the blue trail begins.
Transcribe the last quote as you reach the trail’s end
Without all four, you can not win.

Away from the others, one chair stands alone
Have a seat, but don’t stay for hours
Find 150 degrees, pass over the road,
and enter the garden of flowers.

Follow the circle bordered by stones
‘til you reach the farthest side
Choose the trail that descends to the woods -
It is bordered by railroad ties.

Once again on a boardwalk, find “Two Tree Square”
Then head directly South
Here, find two monstrous trees joined by root
And head west on the pebbled route

Pass by the first boardwalk and cross the bridge
Keep your feet on the wooden path.
Take a rest on the bench near the base of the stairs and
Get ready to do some math.

Total the number of words in the first two quotes
You’ll need this number soon.
Now add up the words in the third and fourth quotes
Add five, and you’re back on the move.

At the top of the steps, use the ties as your guides,
And remember the larger sum
Head to the south counting paces as you go
Rest assured you are nearly done.

Take the smaller number now,
and stand on the giant stone.
Multiply by ten this time
and find your bearing on your own.

Eight paces now – a tall oak tree -
The letterbox you’ll find
Between it’s strong, unyeilding roots.
Please leave it stamped and signed!

Good luck! Please let us know if our rhyming attempts were so horrible that you actually couldn't find a thing!
