UPDATE 12/27/15: Trails are being changed at Oregon Ridge Park, so the first box is temporarily removed and this set is retired until further notice.

UPDATE 7/02/2009: Clues have been updated for "Maple" and "Steeple Chase" due to reblazing of the trees and changes to the trails. Recent logging activity has changed the park landscape. Take care and rehide all boxes carefully!

Oregon Ridge Park management has asked us to emphasize:
None of the boxes are far from the trail. Please do not go deep into the woods. Please take care to not trample delicate plant life (ferns, wildflowers, etc.) Thank you!

This series of three boxes resides in Oregon Ridge Park in central Baltimore County. To get to the park, proceed on Interstate 83 North to Hunt Valley. Take the Shawan Road West exit and go about a mile or so until you come to a light. Make a left onto Beaver Dam Rd., and then make a quick right to go to the park. Do not turn into the Oregon Grille restaurant parking. Also, do not go to the second park entrance further down Beaver Dam Rd, since this will not lead to the boxes. Once you drive into the park, proceed to the parking lot and park. Walk to the Nature Center, which is located past the parking lot. It’s a nice little building with lots of info on the park. The trail to the boxes begins here.

“Maple”
The park is full of maples trees, from which syrup and candy are made annually and sold at the Nature Center.

From the Nature Center, proceed across the wooden bridge. At the end of the bridge make a left onto “Logger’s Trail”. After the third red blaze (look on both the right and left side for blazes), make a right onto “Laurel Trail.” After the third right-hand blue blaze, walk about 30 paces. You will see a small clearing with fallen logs to the left of the trail, and a “Y” tree on the right of the trail. From the “Y” tree, take a bearing of 65 degrees and walk about 15 paces (watch out for logs) to a tree. Behind this tree is a pile of rocks hiding the box. Please be discreet and re-hide carefully, as this site is visible from the trail.

“Steeple Chase”
Hunt Valley is known for its steeple chases.

For this box, continue along the “Blue Laurel” trail. The hike becomes a bit steep and rocky here, so be careful. Eventually you will cross a grassy lane (a county gas easement). Keep following blue blazes until you come to a “T.” Take a right, and then an immediate left at the fork onto the “Ivy Hill” trail. Continue and then make a right onto the “Short Cut” trail. After the first white blaze, look for the “W” tree on the left. Continue 17 paces along the trail from the “W” tree. On the left is a tree with a hole in the trunk. The box is not in this hole, but is at the base in a larger hole made from the remains of a rotted root.

“Mine and Quarry”
The park is built on the remains of an old marble quarry and ore mine.

Continue along the trail from the last box. At the “T,” make a left onto the red trail. When you get back to the grassy lane, make a right to stay on the trail. Where the trail bears left back into the woods, you are pretty much at the top of the ridge, so stop and take a look out onto Hunt Valley. Continue on left into the woods, and make a left at the fork onto “Logger’s Trail”. Continue downhill until you get to “8”. Look to the right. The box is under some little rocks on top of the big one. This location more or less marks the beginning of the mine and quarry area.

To return to the Nature Center, continue on the “Logger’s Trail.” Eventually you will come back to the wooden bridge which leads back to the Nature Center.

We hope you enjoyed the boxes and the park. We’d love to hear how your journey went! Also, please report the condition of the boxes to sas1470@comcast.net if you encounter any problems.
