12 Months in a Year – April
***9/2/13*** BECAUSE OF OVERGROWN BRUSH THIS BOX IS INACCESSIBLE AND THE CLUES DON'T WORK. LAST I CHECKED, BOX IS MISSING.

This is a series of 12 boxes observing each month of the year. TrailMix and Yankeesfan will do our best to get a box planted each month in a timely fashion. See you on the trails!

My son celebrates his birthday in April. It is also the start of the baseball season. My son loves baseball and is a huge Yankees fan! This box is dedicated to him. I chose to plant this box at the Nike Site in Shelton, where my son spent several years playing Little League, including the season he had to suffer through wearing a Red Sox uniform! He has since moved on to the Babe Ruth League. The Nike Site has an interesting history, and no, it is not named after the sneaker! It used to be the launch area for the Nike missile. The Shelton CT Nike Site was operational from 1957-March 1961. Luckily, none of the missiles from this site were ever put into use, however, in August 1959, a short circuit caused one of the missiles to smoke in the launch pit. Army crews took care of the fire and disarmed the missile while the Huntington Fire Co. stood by. For more info on these missiles and the Shelton Nike Site, visit coldwar-ct.com OR sheltonamerican.com (look under SALL History on left of screen). Decades after the missiles were removed from the site, the land was eventually returned to the city of Shelton. Today, it is a recreational complex with ball fields, tennis courts, playground, and daycare facility.

Directions:

The Shelton Nike Site Recreation Center is located on Mohegan Road in Shelton, next to Mohegan School, whose street address is 47.

Clues:

Park at the end of the lot that is farthest away from the ballfield (but not the upper lot), and nearest to the cut-through to Mohegan school. Now walk on the grass, towards Mohegan Rd, with the entrance driveway on your right and a swath of trees and brush on your left. Walk until you see an obvious “break” in the fallen down stone wall that is on your left in the brush, almost like a path that leads to the fence at the edge of the school property. Carefully make your way into the brush, being careful not to poke an eye. You should be facing the side of Mohegan school, with a 5-sister beech(?) tree on your left. Now turn to your left to face the 5-sister tree. Now there are a jumble of rocks at the base and to the right of the 5-sister tree. The box is within that jumble of rocks. A logbook , “Yankee blue” ink and 2 stamps are included in the box. Remember, ‘tis the season when on Saturdays and weeknights, this place is full of people. Please be stealthy in finding and rehiding this box. Any concerns, please contact me through LbNA.
