“Ash nazg durbatuluk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatuluk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul!”

This year, 2012, marks the 75th anniversary of the publication of J.R.R. Tolkien’s THE HOBBIT. This is the book that tells the story which is the center of his more monumental work, THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Later this year, the movie will be released in two parts. To celebrate the anniversary, here is a nine-box series of two-sided hand-carved, NOT FOR TRADE, stamps which illustrate the nine riddles in Chapter 5, which I believe is the center of the center of the Trilogy.

The sixth riddle:

A box without hinges, key, or lid,
Yet golden treasure inside is hid.

DIRECTIONS: (Heading WEST) RT84, take Exit 14. Right on to Lakeside Road; left on to Main Street. Ichabod Road bears left to cross over the highway; Russian Village Road continues straight and climbs up the hill.
(Heading EAST) RT84, take Exit 13. Left on to Fish Rock Road; left on to Ichabod Road and across the highway. First left is Russian Village Road.

CLUES: Dwarves are always portrayed as fierce warriors. They are also masters in crafting fabulous mechanisms and works of art from gem stones and precious metals. Dragons cannot resist the lure of such treasure. In 1885, Fabergé Jewelers
began crafting the same exquisite works of art for Tsar Alexander III and the royal family of Russia, intended to be given as gifts at Easter. The sixth riddle takes you to the area surrounding Churaevka, the Russian Village in Southbury, CT. (Saint George, the Dragon-slayer, is one of the patrons of Russia. HMMM?) The Village is a historic site, although private property. Visit respectfully.

If you have come from the East, cross over the highway onto Ichabod; right on to Fish Rock; over the highway onto River, and right on to Oakdale. You are very near the Housatonic River, which stretches out to almost form a lake. Remember that Smaug’s demise took place on Long Lake, destroying the town of Dale, while Thorin Oakenshield was King under the Mountain, and feverishly searching for the egg-sized gem, called the Arkenstone. HMMM. If you have come from the West, take a right on to Fish Rock when you come to the end of the exit; follow to River; as soon as you cross back over the highway take a right on to Oakdale.

You will see the entrance to RT84 West on the right and straight ahead two large white signs “NO THRU TRAFFIC” “LOCAL TRAFFIC ONLY.” Ignore these signs and pass them, and then IMMEDIATELY park on the side of the road. To your right, you will see a chain link fence and a grove of large pine trees alongside of the highway. (If Wargs attack, climb the trees!) With the fence on your left, count three large trees. The sixth RIDDLES BOX is hidden at the base of the third tree, under two large pieces of bark. There is a special metallic ink for stamping. But no logbook. PLEASE SNAP THE INK PAD CLOSED TIGHTLY. Please hide it well, after you have stamped in.
