Clues: Fairytale Trail

This box was planted on April 14, 2012 by Girl Scout Junior Troop 66129 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of girl scouts. Please sign & date the log book & stamp with your stamp, then tightly seal and replace all letterboxes. This hike is easy and mostly flat and takes about 45 minutes without stopping for the letterboxes. It is a great hike for children 10 years or under. Plan extra time to do the letterboxes. [Compass instructions are given for those that wish to learn & use a compass, but this search can be done without one.]

Park in the parking area at Onion Mountain Park, in Simsbury, located on West Mountain Road, just south of Flamig Farm.

Follow the yellow trail from the parking area near the sign post and continue until the trail branches. Take the left branch and count about 30 steps until you are at the remainder of a stone wall. Site 60◦ on your compass (turn left) and look for the double tree with barbed wire on one side. (Please be careful of the barbed wire!!) In a hole at the base of the tree you will find “Galloping Along”.

Continue along the trail around a corner and up a hill. You will come to a tall tree on the right marked with a yellow blaze, with branches only at the top. Look to the right and you will see many rocks that look like a stone wall has fallen down. Site 320◦ (NW) on your compass (turn right) and go past the old stone wall and look for a large birch tree. Next to the birch tree under a pile of rocks you will find “Crown Power”.

Continue on the trail until you reach a tree on the left with a yellow blaze with a white dot under it. Turn back the way you came and walk back the trail about 30 steps and on the left you will see a pile of dead logs. Look under the pile to find “Flower Power”.

Continue on the trail back past the tree with the yellow blaze and white dot until you see the sign for the Orange Trail. Site 210◦ (SW) on your compass (turn left) and look for a leaning tree. In the hollow of the leaning tree you will find “Princess Magic”.

Continue on the yellow & blue trail (turn right from the yellow trail) past the #8 Eagle Scout marker, until the intersection where the yellow trail splits to the right from the blue trail. (If you go past the wooden sign for "Blue Trail", you have just missed it!) Starting from the intersection, take 14 steps onto the yellow trail and look to your left. You will see a rotting tree leaning up against a huge pine tree. At the base of the leaning tree, you will find “Glass Slipper”.

Re-trace your steps back to the intersection of the blue & yellow trail & take a right to continue on the Blue trail. Continue past a fire circle to an open clearing where the blue trail meets the orange & red trails. From the middle of the clearing, site 340◦ (N) on your compass (turn left) and take about 28 steps up the orange trail. On the right just after the first tree with an orange blaze, search under the rocks at the base of the next tree and you’ll find the “Lost Crown”.

Return to the parking lot by retracing your steps back to the clearing and continuing straight to the gate that is visible from the clearing.

Hope you enjoyed the hike! Please contact me if you had trouble finding any boxes or to report any damage.
