Who knew? Not The Olde Oak, but Caspar was the name of one of the three magi or wise men or kings of biblical fame. To read more:

And just about time too that Caspar had a letterbox devoted to him. As coincidence would have it that box is located in the Caspar area on the Mendocino coast. To find it locate and park at Jughandle State Reserve. The parking lot is small so getting there earlier in the day might help secure a parking slot. There is no fee.

To begin your search take the Ecological Staircase Nature Trail. When I was there a stack of rather nice pamphlets were available with blurbs about the numbered posts along the trail. Walk, walk, walk. At one point the trail will take you under Hwy. 1 and a bridge. Keep going and forget about the beach until later. After awhile you will find yourself on a set of long wooden stair steps and it might appear that you will be going back under the road. But you won’t go under the road. Instead the stairs will loop around and up and you will still be in the forest. Stand on that top stair. Walk thirteen steps continuing on the trail and then stop. Walk north off the trail about ten steps. Go to the eastern side of that double tree. About four feet from the forest floor in a trunk split between the two trees under needles and bark I hope you will find the Caspar the Friendly Magi Letterbox wedged and hidden waiting for you.

Please replace or add whatever you need to to keep this box hidden after you’ve returned it to its home. Wind and rain could easily put this box on display.

And thanks for coming!!
