Baby Giant Letterbox
Kauai, Hawaii
Dedicated to "Grampa Ernie"
Trail Difficulty: Moderate, may be slippery, heed warnings posted
Letterbox Difficulty: Easy
Approximate Time: After trail head, about 1.5 to 2 hours
Placed one month after Grampa Ernie (as his great-granchildren referred to him) passed to a better place, this letterbox is a reminder of how we each start on our journey of life as a tiny seedling. We grow every day, getting stronger, always learning, branching out in our own individual way. Eventually we soar to the heavens and beyond. Soar to the sky, Grampa Ernie!
Go to the Waimea Canyon Lookout and enjoy the serene majesty of this awesome canyon. If you can see this canyon on a clear day, you will be blessed with some spectacular colors and views. Continue up the main road to find the Awaawapuhi Trail. Park your car (or your bike if you were ambitious enough to ride your bike up the canyon road) in the small lot at the beginning of this trail.
Follow the winding trail, paying attention to the variety of trees. Many trees have fallen to a permanent sleep. Follow the trail past the 1 mile marker. A mighty tree, fallen many years ago, forces a curve in the trail. Go "under" two more "fallen" trees until you reach a small tree, in the middle of the path, that has stood the test of time. About face, and at 80 degrees there is a tree shaped like a V. Take 10 steps toward the tree. To the right is a "multi-trunk" tree. The [seedling] letterbox is around this tree.
Imagine a forest of majestic redwoods here on Kauai. Enjoy!
