The Surfcaster

Directions:
Take Route 6 East into Provincetown. At the first traffic light, turn right onto Race Point Road. Follow Race Point Road approximately 1.5 miles. On the right you will see a large brown National Park Service sign for the Province Lands Visitor Center. Turn right at the sign into the parking lot.

You will first need to go to the top of the visitor's center and find out how many guns were on the ship Somerset which was wrecked on Peaked Hill Bar in 1778. From here you can see the "backbeach" section of the national seashore, a favorite fishing spot for surcasters.

To locate the Surfcaster letterbox you will need to start behind the outdoor ampitheater at the visitor's center. Look for a sandy path that heads downhill in a NW direction. This short path will come out to the paved bike trail. Cross the bike trail and look NW again for the sandy path. Continue on it until you come to a big sandy clearing. Head N about 80 steps and come to another big sandy clearing. Take the NE path which turns into a narrow trail through the low, wild cranberries. Stay on this little trail heading NE until you find an 8 ft spikey dead tree on your right. Follow the trail E for about 36 steps and you should see the top of the visitor's center at 180 degrees. Walk SE along the sandy dune ridge until you pass another 10 ft spikey dead tree. Bear to the right of it and walk up to the top of the highest dune you can see. It has some exposed roots and dead wood on the top of it. You should be able to see the top of the Old Harbor Life Saving Museum at 315 degrees. The number of guns on the Somerset is the clue to how many steps you need to take to reach the Surfcaster in a 45 degree direction. The box is hidden under the low-lying scrub branches. Look for lady slippers here in late May and early June.

To return to the visitor's center you can take a shortcut. From the top of the high dune you can pick up the path again, continuing SE. You'll run into the bike trail and if you go right you'll come out at the ampitheater.
