Whip City Letterbox
Westfield Riverside Trail
Westfield, MA (Hampden County)

Placed: October 23, 2003 by TehutiKa, AsetKa and kids!
Distance: About 3/4 a mile round trip
Time: 30-40 minutes, stamping included
Difficulty: Fairly easy

Directions: The parking lot for the Westfield Riverside Trail is on the corner of Elm St. and Meadow St. in downtown Westfield.

From the Mass Pike, go right off the exit, and follow the road until you go over a bridge that goes over the Westfield River. After the bridge, take a left at the flashing light, and park near the electric substation.

From Rt. 20, take Rt. 20 until it meets Rt. 10/202 in the center of Westfield. When Rt. 20 goes left towards Russel, MA, stay straight on Rt. 10/202. After you go under a bridge, bear right before you reach the intersection with the flashing light. You'll see the electric substation ahead of you. Pull into the parking lot.

Clues: Westfield is called the Whip City, a nickname established during the horse and buggy days. At one time, there were a dozen companies in the city, making all kinds of horse whips and crops. Today, there are only two left. Walk past the mapboard and head down the trail downriver. The trail goes over the top of a flood-control dike. Walk until you see a park on your right. Near the far end of the park there is a short trail that leads down off the dike to the right. At the base of the dike here are fallen logs. In the western end of the second log is the letterbox.

Please rehide carefully! You are very close to both the park and a residential area, so be discreet.
