The Legend of Raynham Hall
Oyster Bay, New York
For a six month period from 1778 to 1779 Raynham Hall, a home owned by Samuel Townsend, was the headquarters for the British Queens Rangers led by Lt. Col John Simcoe. Col. Simcoe was often visited by British officer Major John Andre. On one of these visits Samuel's daughter, Sally, overheard the two officers discussing Benedict Arnold's plot to surrender the fort at West Point to the British.
Sally passed this information on to the Revolutionary Command through a spy ring. The plot was thwarted, Major Andre was captured and hung, and Benedict Arnold escaped to the British. But how did Sally pass the information on? It would be 150 years before the mystery would be unraveled.
Clues:
From Pale Rider 3 head back to the high power electrical tower. From the intersection beneath the tower head north east at 40°. At the next intersection go left (do not cross the bridge). Go past the bear. At the next intersection go left and at the next intersection head toward the snow man. Go about sixty steps past the snow man and look for the remains of a bear about twenty steps off of the right right side of the trail. (the bear is in bad shape and will not be easily seen from the trail) From what’s left of the bear take five steps at 140° to an upturned tree stump.
