RANGER DUTY at Hodges Village Dam
Please keep in mind this is a public area! Please use utmost discretion when looking for your letterboxes! *All boxes are assessable even when the dam is holding back water.
WELCOME to Hodges Village Dam built in 1959 by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. To date, the dam has prevented $31.8 million dollars in flooding damages. Hodges Village Dam is one of 6 projects in the Thames River Basin that control water entering Long Island Sound.
Drive past the sign for Hodges Village Dam on the right side of the road and the two parking lots on the left. Take a right up the hill towards the HVD office area and park in this parking lot. You will see a large yellow gate next to a “No Hunting” sign that marks the start of the trails. Walk past the gate and turn left to walk on the pavement towards the Hodges Village Dam. When you reach the Dam Gate House, walk past the dam following the right side of the guardrail. Count 12 guardrail posts and look under the large gray flat rock for your first box.
Turn around and walk back over the pavement the way you came. Walk past the same yellow gate you walked around. Just a little bit further after the guardrail ends on the left, you will see some stone stairs on your left leading down the side of the dam. Walk down the stairs and towards the old fire place in front of you. Take the trail heading east, to the right side of the fire place. Keep right and you will come to a set of stone stairs. About halfway down, you will see a small stone wall on your right. Look in the beginning of the wall for box #2!
Walk back up the trail the way you came. Walk over the grass in front of the two white buildings and head down the gravel road. To your right, you will see a trail beginning, marked by a brown hiking sign. Walk into this trail, looking for the large rock on your right. Look between the rock and the old log for box #3.
Continue down the gravel road. At the bottom of the hill, start heading towards the dam through the field and over the flat rock base of the dam. Once you reach the base of the dam, look under the high water mark of 1987 for box #4.
Feel free to explore some of the trails the area has to offer. Hodges Village Dam and Project has over 40 miles of trails ranging from easy to moderately difficult. Maps and brochures are available at the parking lot kiosk you parked in. A new updated map is on the way! I hope you enjoyed your hike and as always if you see any problems please contact the Buffumville Lake and Hodges Village Dam office at 508-248-5697.
