“Ash nazg durbatuluk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatuluk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul!”

This year, 2012, marks the 75th anniversary of the publication of J.R.R. Tokien’s THE HOBBIT. This is the book that tells the story which is the center of his more monumental work, THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Later this year, the movie will be released in two parts. To celebrate the anniversary, here is a nine-box series of two-sided hand-carved, NOT FOR TRADE, stamps which illustrate the nine riddles in Chapter 5, which I believe is the center of the center of the Trilogy.

The seventh riddle:

Alive without breath,
As cold as death;
Never thirsty, ever drinking,
All in mail never clinking.

DIRECTIONS: www.maritimeaquarium.org

CLUES: (Make sure that no one sees you!)

Considering the long, lonely years that Gollum paddled his boat across his underground lake, and considering his great love for “sweet and juicy fissshesss,”it seemed appropriate that the seventh riddle letterbox should be located near a maritime center and an aquarium. The NORWALK MARITIME CENTER AND AQUARIUM was once a factory, clinking out iron work day and night. Now it is a first-rate educational and tourist attraction.

Turn your back on the front entrance of the Center, and you are facing N. Water Street. Find the sidewalk that follows the river and take a little stroll. You will come to two “churchy-looking” kiosks on the left and a playscape dedicated to Allison Wyatt. Then, on the right, you will see the foot bridge crossing the marsh. Walk past the bridge to the end of the stone wall. Walk behind the wall and you will see a worn path that leads back toward the bridge.

Up against the concrete base of the bridge directly underneath the sidewalk,, and under a flat rock, you will find the RIDDLE-THE SEVENTH LETTERBOX There is a special metallic ink for stamping. But no logbook. PLEASE SNAP THE INK PAD CLOSED TIGHTLY. Please hide it well, after you have stamped in.
