“Ash nazg durbatuluk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatuluk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul!”

This year, 2012, marks the 75th anniversary of the publication of J.R.R. Tokien’s THE HOBBIT. This is the book that tells the story which is the center of his more monumental work, THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Later this year, the movie will be released in two parts. To celebrate the anniversary, here is a nine-box series of two-sided hand-carved, NOT FOR TRADE, stamps which illustrate the nine riddles in Chapter 5, which I believe is the center of the center of the Trilogy.

The eighth riddle:

No-legs lay on one leg,
two-legs sat near three-legs,
four-legs got some.

DIRECTIONS: Westfair Fish & Chips
1781 Post Road E
Westport, CT 06880

Take RT95S to Exit 19. Go through the stop sign at the end of the ramp, bearing right, to the traffic light at RT 1. Follow RT 1 to the right, watching the numbers on your right. The numbers will jump from the 3000’s to 1000’s as soon as you cross from Southport into Westport. Be looking for a white strip of stores and a white wall with red letters “WESTFAIR CENTER.” You want to turn into this driveway. DON’T DRIVE PAST THE WALL. The driveway opens up into a hidden parking lot. And here is one of Westport’s best kept secrets, Westfair Fish & Chips.

CLUES: (TRY NOT TO BE SEEN.)
There is a line of tall trees, in front of a wooden stockade fence forming one side of the parking lot. Look for the tree that resembles an Oliphant’s leg. Behind the tree, under ivy and pieces of fence, you will find the RIDDLES –the eighth LETTERBOX. There is a special metallic ink for stamping. But no logbook. PLEASE SNAP THE INK PAD CLOSED TIGHTLY. Please hide it well, after you have stamped in.
