"Dead Men Tell No Tales;
Their Folly Led to a Watery Grave in the Creepy Creek"

Round Trip: approximately half a mile
Difficulty Level: involves wading, climbing up/down banks, hiking on footpaths

Among the annals of ancient law, piracy could be seen as instigating the concept of universal jurisdiction. That is to say, the treason perpetrated by such sea-seasoned rapscallions was reviled so strongly by peoples the world over, that pirates were charged hostis human generis.

The atrocities wreaked under the Jolly Roger should come as no surprise, even to landlubbers. And in order to truly embrace the piratical ways, ye must occasionally indulge in dancing on a dead man's chest- especially an infamous adversary. The following instructions shall bring ye to the site of the dead British soldiers.

Dress carefully, for this shore leave cannae remain dry in traversing the half-fathom or so depths of the creepy creek.

1) Navigate yeself to Twin Pines Park, Belmont.
2) Ye shall find yeself greeted by a lordly lion. Do not let yer fear cow ye, for ye must pass him.
3) Skirt his claws' reach, as indicated by a bronze plaque. Seek cover in the form of a tunnel of trees. Continue forward.
4) At the end of this tunnel, cross the clearing in a southwesterly fashion, on beyond the notice of screaming brats.
5) Discreetly join the paved path and follow it till reaching a wooden fence. This shall be ye guide until reaching an opening marked by a Bay Laurel tree on one side and a Cypress tree on the other.
6) Begin ye descent to the creepy creek. Mind yer step. Here yer crew's attention may be diverted by skipping stones, tadpoles, and water skitters.
7) Head northerly, passing a bank of stones, and join the creek to mask yer travel.
8) Upon reaching the end of the banked stones, begin counting yer paces. At 17 footsteps, ye'll need scurry through the creek in order to pass from the starboard shore to the port shore.
9) Keep a sharp eye for wild blackberry brambles. 35 paces shall bring ye to a Palm tree. Continue onward.
10) A wall of hardened sandbags shall be a sign ye haven't strayed from the course. Pass them.
11) Ye'll reach a shoreless area where the creek must be forded.
12) Triple Eucalyptus trees mark yer stop. If ye pass cottage and kiln, ye've gone too far.
13) Cross to the starboard side and follow the winding path upward to scale the dirt bank. From the top, stone steps are visible. Follow the dirt path to them.
14) These steps shall lead ye to behold the ruined foundation of the soldiers' quarters. Do not cross its threshold through the door-less portal.
15) In the very front, find the glaring nest of metal pip age. Nestled in its bowels lay treasure.
16) About-face. Retrace ye steps, but this time remain in the dirt path above the creek ye just traversed. Mind poison oak and other landly foul.
17) If ye've any doubt of yer navigational skills, a fallen and gnarled tree trunk shall confirm ye travel true. Onward still!
18) A Bay of Laurels resembling Medusa's head should eventually block yer path. Take either fork and carry on.
19) Soon ye'll reach a safe harbor, enclosed by a short wooden fence, where ye can frolic like babes set upon toys.
20) A bridge beckons ye way back, which shall channel yer return to the paved path that eventually directs ye out of the park and returns ye to yer vessel.

*Note: Denizens of the port of Belmont above a certain age may recall nigh five years ago the paintings of skeletonized British guards on the bones of this foundation. Sadly, some do-gooders painted over the art which struck fear into the hearts of chilluns. The bright new paint of this area sets it apart from the rest of the foundation.
