Forgotten Souls Massachusetts #1 - The Spafford Family
Status update ~ This box has been pulled for repairs.
This is a continuation of my Forgotten Souls Series from Maine and my first out-of-state box.
The early settlers of Georgetown are buried in this cemetery. There is a wide variety of gravestone art to be seen, from fierce death's heads to lovely Victorian weeping willows and urns. One style of art was particularly interesting to me and the inspiration for the stamp in this box. As in most old cemeteries you can trace the development of the spelling of a family name as you walk among the stones. The Spafford family has quite a number of variations here. I have also been told that in the early days of this cemetery, blacks were not allowed to be buried within the cemetery proper, but were buried in unmarked graves in a spot just outside. As the cemetery grew over the years that spot has come to be in the very center of the cemetery...
As with all of my Forgotten Souls boxes, I ask that you be respectful of the sacred place you are visiting. Walk gently and enjoy the history around you. My boxes, including this one, are hidden in such a way that you will not need to trample or destory anything to get to them. Though a stone wall is mentioned in the clues it is just a landmark - THE BOX IS NOT IN THE STONE WALL. If you follow the clues correctly the box will be obvious, requiring you to only move a rock or a few sticks. If it requires more effort than that, go back over the clues. Feel free to email me for additional hints if needed. I would love to hear from you.

To a place where souls in Union sleep
A quiet vigil the old trees keep
Midst death's heads and cherubs old settlers rest
Here is the place to begin your quest
A quiet hill with leaning stones
The resting place of settlers bones
On a little knoll, gathered close
The Spaffords lie in gentle repose
An alien sight on one stone you spy
Seems out of place with others nearby
"Here lyes buried" it states 'neath the face
Nearby rests "Mrs. Bettey" in her own quiet place
Due south a large maple on the edge of the grass
Beside it a dirt road where visitors pass
Twenty-five steps to the west, a stone wall nearby
Look just beyond and the treasure you'll spy.
