Time passes and things change. You can still follow the original directions below but after you cross the stone wall you are on what is now a heavily used trail. Walk along next to the logs. Follow the curve to the left and count three large rocks on your right. At the third look a few feet up the hill to a large tree with a clump of smaller trees just to the left. Only one log of the X is left. Look under it; just left of the clump.

This could be a walk along some of the many unmarked paths in life.

Or it could be a short walk on the Punch Brook Trail. Park along Punch Brook Road by the Fish Hatchery entrance. For the last couple of winters this has been a bald eagle wintering place. I assume gourmet food is provided in the ponds. The Punch Brook Trail crosses the road just east of the open area of the hatchery. You should head south.

As you walk along the trail notice several unmarked trails on your left. At the intersection where the marked trail turns right and heads down hill to cross the brook you will go left/straight on the unmarked trail. Follow this along the side of the hill until you reach an intersection with an old stone wall on your left. You will pass between three boulders that cross the trail right by the end of the wall. Turn left just after the boulders and cross the stone wall. Walk about 10 steps between two parallel logs and then turn left. Go another 10+ steps toward the twisty Mountain Laurel and big rock. You’re almost there. Look between the laurel and rock and see a little clump of trees with a fallen X in the middle and a SPOS just left of the trees.

Return the way you came for a round trip of about 0.75 miles or explore a little. Going back the way you came, just after joining the marked trail, you will see an unmarked trail that heads off uphill to your right. The trails wind all around the hillside which is mostly nice open forest. At the top you reach houses. When you are done exploring, if you haven’t reached the marked trail to walk out, just remember that the Punch Brook trail is near the bottom of the hill along the brook.

There are plenty of other nearby paths if you have the time.
