No Inkpad! BRING MARKERS!

The Zoar Trail is located in Newtown, CT, Rt34 to Great Quarter Road, and all the way to the end. The Trail is actually a loop, and each half has attractive features for hiking. But the loop is about 6 miles long. That is why most hikers and boxers take the right trail and walk along the lake until they get to Prydden Falls. Four different letterboxers have planted here. So we have only planted one on the right loop. Most hikers that I have spoken to try the left half of the loop only once. TJ and I thought that if we planted boxes along this trail, they might give it a second try. The left portion of the loop has the other six boxes.

The first box (SPHINX) contains the logbook. There are no ink pads. Please bring along your own colored markers. Suggested colors are on each lid. Hide them well when you are finished.

CLUES:

1)SPHINX-ENVY: (LOGBOOK) Head toward the Lake, to the right of the gated road, following the Blue Blazes. You will come to an open space where many hikers have picnicked and enjoyed a fine view of the lake. Continue on the blue trail, ascending and descending until you come to a “T.” The blazes will direct you to the right. DON’T TURN RIGHT! GO STRAIGHT AHEAD INTO THE WOODS, toward the tumble of rocks. There is an obvious cave formed by two of the largest rocks. In a chamber to the left of the cave, you will find the SPHINX-ENVY LETTERBOX. (It is a riddle why we think that someone is better than we are, simply because they have something and we don’t!)

2)CERBERUS-SLOTH: Taking a left at the “T” on the unmarked trail will return you to the Parking Area. To the left of the gated road is the left loop of the Zoar Trail, marked by a wooden sign on a tall pole. Follow the blue blazes until you come to a two-sister tree with a blaze on your left. Stand shoulder to shoulder with the tree; right shoulder on right tree, left on left. Looking through the gap toward the ledge, you will see the inverted triangle-shaped cave which is guarded by another two-sister tree. This is the entrance to Hades. Approach from the right side. The CERBERUS-SLOTH LETTERBOX is hidden at floor level behind rocks.(Why are some people so damned discouraging?)

3)SATYR-LUST: Continue on the blue trail. Cross the gravel fire road. Ascend until you come to a double-blazed tree indicating that the trail turns to the left. Look to the right, and you will see a singular tree with a large wild grape vine climbing up it. There is a “game (deer) trail” to the right of this tree which crosses a large fallen tree. The SATYR-LUST LETTERBOX is hidden behind the fallen tree, under a rock to the right of where the game trail crosses it. (There’s something rude about staring at another person’s anatomy,…unless it’s very clear that they are trying to attract your attention!)

4)CENTAUR-PRIDE: Continue on blue, past the intersection of the Blue, Yellow and Red Trails. Climb until the trail begins to cross large boulders. Right before the trail turns back into the woods, you will come upon one such boulder, overlooking a ravine to the right. This boulder has two arrowhead-shaped points that project out into the ravine. Underneath the right point, under flat stones, you will find the CENTAUR-PRIDE LETTERBOX. If you pass a large three-sister oak on the right, you have gone too far. (There is something wrong about raising yourself up by shooting someone else down.)

5)MINOTAUR-ANGER: Continue on the blue; up through the laurel forest and across the top of the ridge. Down again for about 15-20 minutes until you come to the intersection with blue/yellow. Follow the blue to the left and across the creek, twisting and turning up through the rocks. Just before you get to the crest, there is a worn two-sister tree fallen over a boulder toward the right of the trail. The trail goes left and over the boulder. You go to the right side of the boulder, between the two worn trunks to find the MINOTAUR-ANGER LETTERBOX hidden in a little cave. ( It’s a-mazing to me how some people have lost any desire for self-control!)

6)GORGON-GLUTTONY: Stay on the blue and another 10 more minutes until you pass through another laurel grove. Keep going until you come to a very extensive tumble of rocks. WATCH YOUR FOOTING AS YOU DESCEND THE HILL. At the bottom, the trail will come to a tree with a blaze that is slumping or reclining on a rock. Back up the trail just one tree, and under some rocks you will find the GORGON-GLUTTONY LETTERBOX. (Just because we CAN have something, doesn’t mean we SHOULD!)

7)CYCLOPS-COVETOUSNESS: If you stay on the blue, you will come to a sizeable stream. Cross it and the blue becomes a nice smooth walking trail. Don’t get too happy! The nice trail turns into the blue/yellow, while the blue heads up hill and to the left. There is a lot of tree damage in this area, as if the Cyclops has had a tantrum! You will see many sawed logs. And at the base of a tree on the left of the trail with a yellow/blue blaze, you will also see a boulder that looks like it has been sawed off straight. At the base of the straight side, you will find the CYCLOPS BOX. Please hide carefully. NOTE: Stay on the blue/yellow trail, as the Blue trail is closed from April until August so as to protect the nesting eagles and hawks.) (Are we blind when we only see what someone else has, and don’t consider the things they have not?)

Continue on the blue, and you will come to Prydden Falls to your left. Take time to refresh and enjoy the falls before you complete the loop, heading back along the lake. In about 40 minutes, you should be back where you parked.
