Tumalo Falls is a breathtaking waterfall 10 miles west of downtown Bend and a great day hike for kids. This box was planted by my 6 year old son as his first foray into planting letterboxes.
to get to Tumalo Falls, drive west on Skyliner Road (FS 4601) to the end of the pavement, 10 miles out. the road will cross a bridge and turn to dirt. Veer left onto FS 4603, following the signs for Tumalo Falls. In 2 1/2 miles you will find the parking area and the first viewpoint for the falls. After enjoying the view, head up toward the scenic overlooks at the top of the falls. The trail continues past the overlooks. Hike on, looking out for a large boulder on your left, amidst the manzanita. You might like to take a break here! Continue on the trail about 1/8 mile until you see twin boulders on your left, sitting about 20 ft apart. Turn and face the second boulder. Do you see the unworn path to the right of the boulder? Take 40 steps uphill, staying to the right of the boulder. You may find yourself surrounded now (four smaller boulders, three tucked under manzanita and one out in the open) See that one in front of you, almost completely hidden by a huge manzanita? Behind that one is a pine in a small clearing and another boulder hiding the treasure.
