Sunset was established by Christiansburg Cemetery Company as a for profit company. The stockholders were paid with a free grave plot. The land was purchased from Dr. Joseph S. Edie in 1891. Included in this purchase was a family cemetery of the Edie family. Buried there was Charles T. Edie in 1857. Charles was killed by another student while at the college of Hampden-Sydney; inscribed on his monument and readable today is “killed at Hampden-Sydney”. In March 2008, the Town of Christiansburg took ownership of the Cemetery.

Buried here are many prominent citizens of Christiansburg; Judges, Mayors, Council Members, Doctors, Attorneys, Business Leaders and Educators. The most notorious resident buried in an unmarked grave is Virginia Wardlaw of the murderous “black sisters, who was accused in 1910 of murder of relatives for insurance money.

Box # 1: "Letter-boxwood"

Drive to the Christiansburg, Sunset cemetery. As you pass through the main gates, turn left and park where space is “dedicated to the memory of those veterans who made the supreme sacrifice”. Pay your respects and be sure to specifically thank “Post 59”. Spy the tallest tree with your back facing the American Legion, this tree is near your aim. Moving down the steps leading away from “Post 59”, find the nearest path. As you hunt for this treasure, move towards spending “weeks” to find this item past “Sturgill”. You know you are going the right direction, as you pass by “Knowles”. Do not go where “Robinson” is, but consider being a “Walker” and returning to the drawing “Board”. Here at the “Board” you will find the “right” letterbox in the boxwood.

Box # 2: “Peace is found…”
Facing the “Board” walk back to the path to the right and be certain to not follow stones revealing “Nixon”, but look for a “Page” out of history to lead the way. “Trump” the next turn by spending “Summers” in the cemetery. Arriving at the crossroads, B, C, H, & I – move between the earliest alphabet letters. “Weaver” will mark a plot before the “Wardlaws”. Here in the Wardlaw plot, remember the drama of the “Black Sisters” which enveloped this family through acts of death and violence – all over insurance money. While facing Lizzie and John you will spy two bushes “Shield”ing the treasure you seek. Peace will be found to the NW “right” under the bush.
