This is not a geocache. Feel free to visit, but do not trade the stamp out of this box.
Thanks to those boxers who initially scoped out this adoptable location.
Round Trip: 1 mile (If you want a longer hike, continue on the Split Rock Loop Trail after you find the box. The Spur trail is .5 and the loop trail is 5 miles.)

Difficulty: Easy to Moderate. If its winter, be careful going down any steps as they will probably be icy. Hiking poles are extremely helpful during winter months.

Time: 1 hour unless you do the loop trail.
Dog friendly: yes
Child friendly: yes, but keep a close eye on them around the water.

Before heading farther north, stop in at the Superior Hiking Trail Association Office for maps of the trail. Make sure you know their office hours, as they are shorter in the winter!

This letterbox is on the Superior Hiking Trail about halfway between Gooseberry Falls State Park and Split Rock Lighthouse State Park.

The Walkingsticks were on vacation in Duluth and doing some hiking. We weren’t really familiar with the area, but we had some fun carvings and we adopted some beautiful letterbox spots. Imagine our surprise when we found a woolly mammoth on the Superior Hiking Trail. It is pretty cold north of Two Harbors.
Park at the Wayside that is by the Split Rock River. Use the hiking trail that goes straight up into the woods. This is the Spur Trail. You will use the Spur Trail to get to the ‘main’ Superior Hiking Trail. After walking ½ mile, you will come to a three-way intersection. Go to the right, which will bring you to the bottom of a waterfall. On the other side of the bridge near the waterfall, there is a trail register. Sign in, if you so desire. Near the trail register, there is a trail to the left. You will get a wonderful view of the waterfall from at the end of this side trail. Stand with your back to waterfall with your right leg against the end of the bench (the other end of the bench will be a split birch tree). Take a reading of 45 degrees on the compass. Go about 12-14 steps (off the trail) from the bench at 45 degrees. You will step over some fallen logs on the way. Under another fallen log with a large bluish rock on top is your prize.
Happy hunting and good luck!
