The Ledges Lb

What is the Ledges?

From the Swimming Holes website: www.swimmingholes.org

On Harriman Reservoir there are 2 established beach swimming places, but also a place called "The Ledges". This is a well-known, traditional clothing-optional place. A large sandy beach and big, flat rocks at the water's edge (size of beach may be diminished when water level in reservoir is high.) Some rocks to jump from. Please respect the place, no noise, gawking or littering.

From the Friends of the Ledges website: http://ledges.dimentech.com/what-is-ledges.html

The Ledges, named for its large stone outcroppings, is a small section of the undeveloped 28-mile public recreational shoreline of Harriman Reservoir. Harriman Reservoir is part of the Pacific Gas and Electric National Energy Group’s extensive hydroelectric power project of the Deerfield River.

Note that the nearest parking area access point to this section of the lake is open only from Memorial Day through Columbus Day. The parking area can fill up on a nice summer weekend, plan to arrive earlier than latter or visit midweek.
If the parking area is gated, please park with consideration for the private landowners in the area.

Disclaimer: Not every letterbox is for every letterboxer.
As you walk from the parking area through the picnic area you will eventually come to a sign or two that read:
“Attention Beyond this sign you may encounter nude sunbathers”

Expect to encounter nude sunbathers while hunting for this ‘box. Or you may wish to come during the winter when you are unlikely to encounter nude sunbathers. Depending on your point of view about simple nudity, you may want to pass on visiting the Ledges and looking for the letterbox altogether.
Not every ‘box is for every ‘boxer.

Clues: (Note, a *pace is two steps.)

From the Ledges main beach area (not the beach/car-topper boat launch area near the lower parking lot), follow the trail approx. NW along the reservoir. It is unblazed but easy to follow.

Continue to follow the trail until you reach a rope swing in a tree overhanging the reservoir. (How daring are you? :-D) From here proceed approx. 204 paces* until you come to a woodpecker’s feast on the right. Between Woody’s feast and a rock sticking out of the hill, if you look closely you will see that another unmarked, smaller trail heads away from the reservoir here.

Take this unmarked trail uphill until you come to a large stone on the right, the path turns right around the stone. As you step around the rock you will see that someone has fashioned a bench out of an old board here, a good place to catch your breath if you want to pause for a minute.

From the bench, head up to where the trail splits. Turn left and follow the trail 18 paces to a 6+ foot pine stump on the right of the trail. Between the stump and a white birch lays a fallen birch log. Follow the deadfall to it’s end and a SPOS to claim your prize.

If you come to a sign on a tree in the middle of the trail that reads:
“Clothing is required beyond this point,” then you have gone too far!

Please stamp in away from the hiding place, I recommend the bench, and carefully avoid making or at least try to conceal social trails to the letterbox--especially in mud or snow! Kindly re-bag the log, reseal the Lock-n-Lock type box, and re-hide the letterbox exactly where it was placed, covering it well and contact the placer if you find any problems.

Thank you, Connfederate
