BUILD A BURGER

Wait! Don’t put the grill away yet! Get out that spatula! There’s still time for a “quickie” burger.

These boxes are located around Hope Lake, which is part of the Shelton Lakes Greenway trails. Please park at the Hope Lake picnic area on Nell’s Rock Rd. Yes, there are picnic tables here – perfect for enjoying a burger. For those of you who are more of a hot dog aficionado, please look up the “Footlong” series. And if you would rather get right to dessert, look for “I Scream For Ice Cream”. Markers are included with these boxes. Logbook in boxes 1 and 6.

Box #1 BUN

Whether you prefer your bun toasted or soft, it has to be first.
Enter trail behind and to the left of kiosk. After crossing a small wooden footbridge, look to your left for a 2-sister tree. Look behind the 2-sister, at base, for Box #1. Be careful here. This is where I encountered a fairly large black snake. I did not get a good look at it. Too busy running.

Box #2 BURGER WITH KETCHUP

Hamburgers were voted the #2 item on the “top ten things to put ketchup on” list. Number 1? French fries, with chicken nuggets, hot dogs, grilled cheese, sausages, potato wedges, spaghetti, hashbrowns and eggs rounding out the list.
After crossing a second wooden footbridge, and passing two large, flat boulders, look for a white trail blaze on a pine tree. Look to the left of the pine to see a jumble of rocks with one prominent tree in the middle of the jumble. Box #2 is at the right base of the tree.

Box #3 TOMATO

Whether it’s a beefsteak, big boy, or boxcar willie, tomato slices are a must on burgers.
Back on the trail, walk until you begin to see an island in the lake, which will be on your right. At this point, look for a tree on your left that appears to be growing around the rocks. (but please also keep your eyes on your footing-trail slightly descends with many rocks to stumble on) Box #3 is in the rocks to the right of this interesting tree.

Box #4 LETTUCE

My favorite varieties of lettuce are green leaf and red leaf. But you can choose any kind you like!
You will now come to the intersection of the blue and white trails. Take the wooden bridge to your right. The trees are now blazed blue/white. Staying on blue/white trail, you will soon come upon a 5-sister tree on your left. Box #4 is in the tree. Please rehide carefully so it does not fall out of tree!

Box #5 CHEESE

Oh no! You wanted a cheeseburger! It won’t be melted on top, but here is your cheese!
Cross a wooden footbridge and take the blue trail to your right. Very soon, you will see on your left, a 3-sister tree with one very crooked sister! Box #5 is behind the sisters.

Box #6 VEGGIE BURGER

Ok, so you don’t want to clog your arteries with all that fat. I can respect that. Have a lean veggie burger instead. But here is a tip for all you vegens—your veggie burger will taste much better with a slice of bacon on top!
Keeping on the trail, and not very far ahead, you will see a “normal” 3-sister tree up the hill on your left. Box # 6 is behind this 3-sister tree under some rocks.

Our “quickie” burger is done. Hope it was enjoyable.
