Wind Rock Trail is a moderately easy trail through the Mountain Lake Wilderness which leads to scenic overlooks with elevations from 3100- 3800 feet. Some of this trail follows the Appalachian Trail eastward. The Wind Rock Overlook offers sweeping views of Rocky Mountains (3300'), Fork Mountain (3645') and Peter's Mountain (4000').

Driving Clue:
When driving to Wind Rock, you will take route 460 to route 700 towards Mountain Lake. It should be noted that route 700 is quite windy and steep. In the winter season, the road can be difficult to maneuver due to early icing and twisty roads. Also route 700 is not plowed in the winter, so snow is a problem that you may want to avoid. Please be careful driving in the winter season.

Upon reaching the "Top of the World", continue left down a road that leads towards the Blueberry Cottages. Always continue following the signs which lead towards the Appalachian Trail. The road to the left, Mountain Lake Rd., is paved from Hotel Circle Dr. for about 0.6 mile. After the road becomes a gravel road, continue for about another 4.8 miles. This will take about 15 minutes. Upon reaching the large parking lot on your left, enter the trail towards the trail sign. This walk is about a third of a mile and you will want to take a left just before the large fire pit on your left towards Wind Rock.

Hiking Clue:
Wind rocks is located 1,525.3 miles from Katahdin, VA. Hiking in the southward direction, just before crossing Mountain Lake Rd. you will see a large fire pit on your right. Take a right just after the fire pit towards Wind Rock. If you see a path leading towards a large outcrop of rocks, you have gone too far.

Wind rocks is located 651.1 miles from Springer, VA. Hiking in the northward direction, walk about one third of a mile after crossing Mountain lake Rd. You will want to take a left just before the large fire pit on your left to enter the short trail towards Wind Rock.

Letterbox Clue:
Walk towards the overlook and take a few moments to enjoy the spectacular view. Turn with your back facing the outlook and then face 10:00 towards the rocks. Walk 16 paces towards this rock pile. You will see a small, well-"lichend" tree shaped like the second to last letter of the alphabet on your right. "Why" is that??? Facing this tree, turn 90 degrees left and find the 'windy rock' just under the left-hand side of the largest boulder. You will see some leaves and a SPOR over it. This letterbox is near the bottom of the large rock pile, so don't climb to high to find it. After finding this letterbox, please rehide it well.

Also, please don't forget to log this find! Happy Letterboxing!!!!
