John Wesley Powell is renowned as the first white man to systematically explore the Colorado River – especially the Grand Canyon. Most people would never guess he had a connection to Jackson, OH. He was born in Mt. Morris, NY in 1834 but his father moved the family to Jackson in 1838 and they remained here until 1846. Little John did not have a very happy stay in Jackson. His minister father was an outspoken abolitionist in those years before the Civil War and that reputation was enough to get little John stoned by his classmates when he went to school. The situation was bad enough that they removed him from school and had him tutored by local self-taught Renaissance man with a scientific bent named George Crookham. It was from Mr. Crookham that young John had his interest in science nurtured and doubtless helped set him on the course that led to the mighty Colorado and later directorship of the U.S. Geological Survey. Some years after his death, a local lodge mounted a project to build the little stone building on Courthouse Square to honor him. It’s a little shabby now but it stands there still as a mostly unnoticed curiosity. That’s where you need to go to begin your search for this box. If you know the name of his boat that carried him down the mighty Colorado, you’ll have no trouble finding it.
