We have been hunting for letterboxes for several years now and decided it was high time we planted one. In honor of our athletic daughters we decided to start a series of boxes at the location of their Cross Country meets. If you’ve never been to a Cross Country meet, it is good to know that it is a lousy spectator sport. The upside is it is almost always in a beautiful location!
The first race of the year is traditionally held at the largest amusement park in the Northwest! By “6-Flags” standards, this is not a gigantic park, but for home grown fun, it is a great place to spend a summer day. At the time this letterbox was planted, major construction was going on at HWY 95, once completed we will adjust clues if necessary. If you happen to look for this box during the first weekend of September (after Labor Day), make sure to come watch the Coaster Cross Invitational Cross Country meet. Great sportsmanship and a discounted ticket into Silverwood for the day!
To start your search for this box, drive approximately 14 miles north of Coeur d’Alene on Hwy 95. Turn left onto Old Highway 95; look out for locomotives, notorious in these parts of Idaho. Continue for 1 mile to Brunner Road. Turn right onto Brunner and park safely on the side of the road somewhere. This area is very flat because from 1973 to 1988, the land with an airstrip. Walk due east on Brunner Road for .2 miles; be wary of sleepy amusement park operators coming to work to run one of the 65 attractions in the park. Once again you must navigate over the R&R, look both ways before crossing! You will notice a small pull out with a “Private Drive” sign (ignore for the moment). Facing a short stretch of fencing, you should see Aftershock, to your right. “This metal monster dominates the skies over Silverwood. At 191 feet, this beast is really two thrills in one because not only does it take you forwards through a cobra roll and inverted loop, but backwards as well!” (Silverwood website) Beyond the fence are 3 pine trees, two very close together. Cautiously (remember the Private Drive sign?) walk to the right most tree of the two close together. You will notice more train tracks, but don’t worry, this is from the original park in 1988 which included a few carnival rides, a main street with shops, and an authentic steam train that traveled in a 30-minute loop around the property. Under one of the trees is a large boulder with two smaller rocks set next to it (between the fence and the tree). You will find the box under the rocks.
Have pity, this is our first carving attempt. Roller coasters are not easy to carve. Once you have carefully replaced the box to its safe hideaway, head over to the park! Just for fun, ride the train!!
