Mitchell College - originally named New London Junior College -- was founded on Sept. 14, 1938 by a group of New London, CT citizens as a private, nonprofit, coeducational, 2 year college. Dr. Richard Saunders, who had been instrumental in the founding, was elected its first president.
The school opened its doors to its first freshman class on Sept. 18, 1939. During the fall term of 1942-43, nearly all of the male students entered the armed services. With demands from the US Army and Coast Guard for the use of its facilities, the school elected to disband day classes and convert its facilities to war uses. Regular classes resumed in September 1946.

The name Mitchell College was officially adopted in 1950 by the trustees to honor the Alfred Mitchell family who were principal benefactors of the college since its founding.
In 1956 under President Dr. Robert Weller Mitchell College was recognized and awarded membership in the New England Assoc. of Schools and Colleges. Today, the college grants both associate and bachelor degrees.

Mitchell Woods is a privately owned park open to the public. It is maintained by Mitchell College as trustees
created initially by Annie Mitchell in 1931, in memory of her husband Alfred.
The 26 acre park includes a trail system, playground, 2 little league baseball fields, and 4 tennis courts.
It is open sunrise to sunset; NO alcoholic beverages are allowed; dogs are allowed but must be leashed.

Find your way to the Toby May Playfield parking lot on Ocean Avenue in New London, CT.
Walk back to the parking lot entrance. Facing the street start walking left (against traffic). You will pass the Congregational Beth-El and a fire hydrant. Continue. As you approach a second fire hydrant you should notice the entrance gate to Mitchell Woods (on your left).

Enter the woods and continue down the straight path until you notice (2) 5 sister trees (one on each side). The MITCHELL COLLEGE LETTERBOX is at the base (big trunk)of the
tree on your right hidden by grass, leaves, and sticks. Please be discrete in stamping and rehiding.

Continue down the path. It narrows, bends to the right, goes downhill, levels off, and bends to the left. Continue.
Notice the 2 sister tree in the middle of the path. Go to it and face the faces (sad/happy). Notice the small stump in the background. 12 paces to the stump and you should find the MITCHELL POND FROG LETTERBOX in it hidden by grass, leaves, and sticks. Again, please be discrete in stamping and rehiding. To get back to your car, simply retrace your steps.

MITCHELL COLLEGE STUDENTS can access these 2 boxes by first finding their way to Mitchell Pond.
Face the pond in such a way that when you look over your left shoulder you should see the 2 wooden posts and orange chain. Now look over your right shoulder. See the path heading into the woods. Take that path. You should pass a fire pit on your left. Continue. Notice the 2 sister tree in the middle of the path. Go to it and face the faces (sad/happy). Notice the small stump in the background.
12 paces to the stump and you should find the MITCHELL POND FROG LETTERBOX in it hidden by grass, leaves, and sticks.
Please be discrete in stamping and rehiding.

With your back towards the stump and facing the tree in the middle of the path you should notice 3 trails (left, straight, right). Take the left one. The path bends right and goes uphill and bends to the left. Continue on the path. Just before you reach the large tree in the middle of this path you should notice (2) 5 sister trees (one on each side).
The MITCHELL COLLEGE LETTERBOX is located at the base (big trunk)of the tree on your left hidden by grass, leaves, and sticks. Again please be discrete in stamping and rehiding.
If you continue you will reach the Ocean Avenue entrance to Mitchell Woods. To get back, simply retrace your steps.

Kindly update us on the status of these 2 boxes. Thank you.
