(North bound)To reach the Hanging Rock trailhead from Interstate 81, take exit 141 toward Salem. Turn right onto VA- 419 N/N Electric Rd. Take the 3rd right onto Dutch oven rd.
(South bound) Take exit 141 toward VA-311 N/Salem/New Castle, turn left onto VA -419N/Electric Rd, take the third right onto Dutch oven Rd/State route 863.
This is an easy on easy off location of I-81, a great place for a picnic and a beautiful short walk. If you need a break from driving this is a great spot to take that break. Also for dog owners, this is a great spot for Fido to stretch his/hers legs.
Upon reaching this location, you will see a parking lot with a statue of General John McCausland. This is a spur of the actual Hanging Rock trail.
Opened in 1999, the Hanging Rock Battlefield Trail in Salem (just outside of Roanoke) is associated with Southern Virginia's impressive Civil War history. The northern trailhead at Hanging Rock was the site of the 1864 'Hunter's Raid’ battle in which General John McCausland's Confederate forces won a substantial victory against the retreating Union army under the command of General David Hunter. The site is marked by a monument along VA Route 311.
