If you're fond of horses, hikes or just picnicing in a beautiful natural space in the middle of the city, head to the Equitatian Field in Rock Creek Park. Maps are available At the Nature Center or online at http://www.nps.gov/rocr/planyourvisit/upload/ROCRmap1.pdf

I recommend a hike along the Western Ridge Trail to visit this box. You can park in the small lot at picnic area 27 and hike up, or at the Horse Center and hike down the ridge. Equitation is a large fenced field where you will sommetimes see riders putting their horses through their paces. The trail passes to the west of the corral. As you pass the corral look to the west into the woods. You will see a very tall, very bare tree trunk that stands like a ghostly sentinel overlooking the field. Circle around the back of this beheamoth stump so you are facing it with the field in the background. Immediatelly to the left, an old tree trunk is laying on the ground. In a y-shaped nook of this trunk, covered with a large piece of bark, you will find the Equitation box. Enjoy.
