This box is dedicated to Winnipeg's early brewing history. Where the current GreatWest Life Building is now at Osborne and Broadway is the former location of Celestin "Whiskey" Thomas' Winnipeg Brewery, established in 1873. Whiskey began brewing in his home at the settlement of Middlechurch along the Red River in the 1860s, however, his expansion and production size brought him to what was then the centre of town. His home and brewery were located all on this lot as well as a stream which used to flow through the property called Colony Creek. Colony street is the new paved formation for this lost watershed, the remnants of which can be noticed as a slight incline when traveling west from Osborne onto Broadway. A small bridge existed on broadway over the creek, then known as Dingman's Crossing. The Winnipeg Brewery was one of seven production breweries in the city of Winnipeg at its inception in 1873. By 1887, the brewery was purchased by Patrick Shea and his partner John McDonagh (who would die a few years later giving sole naming rights to Shea). Shea's Brewery dominated the landscape of Winnipeg until it was purchased by Labatt's in 1953, eventually seeing Shea's brand name fall into obscurity by the early 1970s when Labatt's moved to the north end of the city by 1973 leaving a giant cleared area and space for the current buildings that surround it today.

Clues

Begin at the corner of Colony and Broadway (if it's a weekend, park in the giant empty lot of GreatWest Life, or find street parking). Enter the parking lot and locate #700. Walk to the backside of 700 to a worn foot path. Walk this path but veer left to the four trunked tree. From here, walk 36 steps South towards the Assiniboine River. Whoops, too far! Turn Left and face the hedgerow. Locate the electrical box on the opposite side of the hedge, from its furthest left support beam count 4 clusters of hedge to its left. On the back side of this cluster is the relic in its camo box. Please be sure to re-hide with debris on top.

Hint: If you cant locate the exact cluster of bush - have someone stand on the parking side between 733 and its corresponding outlet, the bush is directly in the middle of these markers.

If you have a favorite beer coaster, feel free to bring it along and swap it with the growing breweriana collection.

Skol!
