The Green Mountain Boys started as a militia in the 1760’s in the area that is now southwestern Vermont. They were led by Ethan Allen, his brother Ira Allen and their cousins Seth Warner and Remember Baker. When Vermont declared itself an independent country in 1977 the Green Mountain Boys became the state militia. They adopted a flag with a green field symbolizing the Green Mountain Boys. The flag also had a corner with thirteen white stars as a tribute to the thirteen colonies. In 1791 Vermont joined the United States as the 14th state. The flag continues to be used by the Vermont National Guard.
In 1785 Ira Allen founded the village of Shelburne Falls. This was a busy little place with a bridge over the LaPlatte river. The river was dammed. Nearby were a forge, gristmill and sawmill. The LaPlatte River Nature Park now conserves this important wetlands.
This letterbox is almost a driveby. You can enhance your day by adding on a nice walk to the river on the trail. Park at the Community Gardens on LaPlatte Circle. Walk around the gardens to the trail entrance. As you enter the trees count about 35 steps to find a log lining the trail on the right. As you reach the log look right to see a large 3 sister tree/snag. There is a V of two more logs pointing away from the tree and toward you.. Make your way along the right side of the V to the end where there is another tree about four feet from the big tree. Look there for the flag.
Please re-hide carefully since this can be busy.
