Jefferson Furnace

During the 19th century Jefferson Furnace produced some of the finest iron in the world. It is reported that "Jefferson Iron" was used in the 7 ton cannons at Harpers Ferry. It is also believed that this furnace cast the iron used in the Union's first ironclad the "Monitor"
Directions: From Oak Hill take OH 279 west. About 2 miles out of town is Jackson Lake. Drive past the lake to the picnic area on the western edge of the lake. When you turn into the picnic area off 279 you can see the top of the old furnace sticking up above the bank as well as an Ohio Historical Marker about the furnace. Park at the shelter house.
Clues: Go to the southwest corner of the shelter house. Standing on the concrete pad, take a reading of 130º and proceed 10 paces(1 pace = 2 steps). You should be standing in what used to be a road. Now take a reading of 170º and proceed 21 paces. Stop and look for a medium size beach tree to your right with a hollow groove in its trunk. From this tree proceed 7 paces over the bank towards the lake to another beach tree. The Monitor is a small groove at the base of the tree, in a plastic candy tube wrapped in camo tape. Bring a stamp pad and pen.
