Two at Mt. Gilead
Mt. Gilead Cemetery, Keller, TX

The Mt. Gilead Cemetery originally served as a burial ground for families who settled the area in 1847 as members of the Peters Colony, led by Permelia Allen, a widow, who is buried here in an unmarked grave. The oldest marked grave in the cemetery is that of William Joyce (1854), Many other fascinating old tombstones can be found here among the old pecan and oak trees, including a group of very early burial cairns built of native stone to memorialize the dead. On a golden November afternoon, we explored the cemetery and planted these two letterboxes, both of which refer to nearby Keller locations.

To find the Mt. Gilead Cemetery: From FM 1709 (Keller Parkway/Southlake Blvd), go north on Keller-Smithfield Rd passing Rocky Top Ranch on the left (admire the beautiful horses as you pass), and a mysterious, large round white object opposite that looks like a giant soccer ball or perhaps an interstellar communication device. Continue north until Keller-Smithfield Rd. curves to the left and becomes Bancroft Rd. The cemetery will be on the immediate right just after this curve. Pull up to the gate and park. You can enter the cemetery on foot through a small gate next to the large gate.

Box #1: Beam Me Up, Scotty! NOTE: This letterbox was confiscated and is no longer available. It may be replaced in another location and clues will then be updated. Meanwhile, please be discreet and subtle to avoid detection to protect the other box!
What is that very mysterious large round white object on Keller-Smithfield Rd south of the Mt. Gilead Cemetery, anyway? If it is a communication device of some sort, just who does it communicate with – the Mother Ship? The Starship Enterprise? (It’s really just FAA radar -- but still… .) This inspires the letterbox: Beam Me Up, Scotty!

To find the box: Enter the Mt. Gilead Cemetery and walk straight ahead (north), to the historic marker near a fence visible from the entrance. After reading about the history of this old cemetery, look at the interesting, old sandstone burial cairns (another historic marker in this area will explain these). Then look toward the east to a small fenced area surrounding MCCAIN, with another sandstone cairn immediately west of this small fenced area. The letterbox (a camo pounch) is tucked out of sight under the large sandstone on the top near the west end of this burial cairn. Please rehide the pouch carefully out of sight.

Box #2: Rocky Top
Rocky Top Therapy Center was established in 1990 by Doug & Vivian Newton who understood the physical and emotional benefits that horseback riding could offer to individuals with disabilities. Located on a working ranch in Keller, Texas, Rocky Top Therapy Center is a Premier Accredited Riding Center qualified through Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) International. Today, the riding therapy program operates six days a week, with a staff consisting of 14 employees that provide services for over 1,500 clients annually with physical, mental or emotional disabilities or challenges. The therapy team is assisted by 55 specially trained therapy horses and over 250 volunteers each week who provide in excess of 18,000 hours of volunteer service each year.

To find the box: From the historic marker explaining the history of the Mt. Gilead cemetery (or from the previous box location), look toward the east to a small concrete bridge across the creekbed to another section of this old cemetery. Cross the bridge and find the stone marker for Joel Neace. Look beyond this marker and slightly to the left to a large crape myrtle surround by other markers for members of the Neace family. Behind the tombstone for Sarah is an old, broken concrete slab. At the east end of this broken slab near the left side you will find the camo-covered box. Please rehide carefully to protect the box from accidental discovery. Please be respectful of the surroundings and be careful to avoid detection to protect the box! Thanks.
