On this wonderfully crisp day just before Christmas, we decided to plant the stamps that were used for our Christmas card this year. I was joined by my husband, my Marine son who is home on leave, the furbabies-Baby D, Doodles and Reilly and two of the grandfurbabies-Shania and Toby. A great time was had by all!!!

Heading South from Colchester on Route 85, just as you enter Salem, you will see a break in the guardrails on the left side of the road. This is where you need to park for the entrance to Big Brook Gorge Preserve. It seems to be wet in a few places here, so waterproof shoes would be a good idea anytime of year... Also, PLEASE be sure to hide the boxes well so that letterboxers after you will be successful!

Enter the red trail and continue downhill and around the corner. The trail is very well marked! Cross a small stream on rocks and then turn left onto the blue trail. You will have a stonewall on your left. Follow along until you come to a blue arrow pointing right where the trail turns and heads uphill. Stop here, go left, off trail and over the wall. Look between the two close set trees, low in the wall, behind a rock, for your first snowflake.

After re-hiding, continue uphill on blue through a magical Mountain Laurel forest. It must be sooo pretty here when they are in bloom. When you get to the top, with the gorge below you, and the trail turns right, STOP! Go behind the good sized tree on your left and under the rock there you will find your second snowflake.

After re-hiding, continue on blue heading downhill. After a bit you will come to the intersection with red. Go left on it. Walk through a nice stonewall and head downhill. Now you will be walking along the brook. The pups had an awesome time playing in it...BRRRRR!!!!!!! Keep going until you get to the end of the trail. See a nice size cairn there, feel free to add a stone or two. Just past that, uphill is a rock jutting out of the ground. Look behind it, under a rock for your third snowflake.

After re-hiding, turn around and head back up red. When you get to that nice stonewall again, STOP before going through it. Turn left and walk along the stonewall to a tree that is right next to it. There you will see some leaning rocks at the base of the wall. In the middle of these you will find the fourth and final snowflake as well as the logbook for this series.

After re-hiding, continue on red, passing both intersections with blue, all the way back to your car. You have now walked the whole preserve and hopefully had a great time.

Have fun.
