The Fletcher Memorial Library Letterbox

Peewee, although a lifelong resident of Sprague, loved a good out-of-town adventure, and we’re sure that in his nearly 100 years on the planet he had occasion to visit nearby Hampton and the Fletcher Memorial Library. He was a Renaissance man, was Peewee. He probably knew Mrs. Fuller the original librarian!

In order to get this prize, you have to do a little hunting through the library. You will be glad you did—it is a beautiful old building housing a great collection of modern texts, historical documents, children’s literature, and any type of reference material you could wish for, thanks to the intrepid staff and the Connecticut Library System, which allows patrons access to any library materials in the state. Pus, it’s a library in the way some of us remember the libraries of our childhood: architecturally marvelous, a little mysterious, and as comforting as kind old relatives who you want to visit over and over again.

So here’s the first clue: What bird did Benjamin Franklin want the National Bird to be?
Once you know that, you’ll need to know that Claude Monet created a wonderful painting of this bird, and (second clue),since Mr. Franklin was a larger-than-life character, this section is where you will find the book that contains this painting.

When you see the painting you will admit that this bird looks almost regal!
Third Clue: In what city does the original of this painting hang?
When you know the answer to this, go to the on-line card catalogue and type in “About [City].”

Oh dear--look at what the response is! The “Key” to this clue is with the Librarian. You will have to ask her for the thing that gets you in to the section where this book is located.

Fourth clue: When you are there—look around! Is this the coolest library room or what????? Back to your task: find the book, About _____, and look on page 71. It describes a group of people having a really good time at a pub/saloon called . . . what?

Go back to the Librarian and whisper the right answer in her ear, or say, sotto voce, “I believe I have a secret message for you,” then clear your throat discreetly and utter the phrase (without attracting attention, of course) and she will hand you your prize!! You may also want to go back to that magic room and read more about what goes on in that pub, or wander around the rest of the Fletcher Library—small, but endlessly fascinating!
