SIGNS 2002 directed by M. Night Shyamalan, starring Mel Gibson, Joaquin Phoenix, Rory Culkin and Abigail Breslin. Set in Bucks County Pennsylvania, the film centers around Graham Hess, a former minister who has lost his faith after his wife, Colleen, is killed in an accident; his younger brother Merrill, a former baseball player; his son Morgan and daughter Bo. The story includes crop circles, Bo’s penchant for leaving full glasses of water around the house, Colleen’s last words to Graham for him “to see” and for Merrill to “swing away”, green creatures, Graham, Merrill, Morgan and Bo trying to survive an alien invasion, and the return of Graham’s faith. It might seem that crop circles, baseball and faith have nothing in common but, surprise, they do! This is by far my favorite movie.

THE SIXTH SENSE 1999 directed by M. Night Shyamalan, starring Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osment. Set in Philadelphia PA, the film opens with Dr. Malcolm Crowe, a child psychologist, being shot by former patient, Vincent. We then see Malcolm as he begins a new case with 9 year old Cole Sear. After many frightening encounters, Cole finally tells Malcolm that “I see dead people…..walking around like regular people”. Really creepy!!! And how shocked we are to find out that Malcolm is one of those dead people, having actually been killed in the beginning of the film. Malcolm helps Cole to live with his ability to see dead people, and Cole helps Malcolm to rest in peace. Still creepy!

THE VILLAGE 2004 directed by M. Night Shyamalan, starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Joaquin Phoenix, Adrien Brody, William Hurt and Sigourney Weaver. Set in what we think is a 19th Century village outside of Philadelphia PA, Alice Hunt and her son Lucius, Edward Walker and his blind daughter Ivy, and Noah Percy are a few of the village’s inhabitants. The village is surrounded by woods with creatures referred to as “those we don’t speak of”, who are attracted by the color red. Needless to say, no one wears red! When Lucius is stabbed by Noah because Noah loves Ivy, but Ivy and Lucius love each other, Lucius needs medical supplies. But, the elders of the village have a secret they don’t want any of the villagers to find out. So they do the logical thing – they send blind Ivy into the woods to get to town for meds. Ivy somehow makes it and returns to Lucius. The big secret – being victims of crime in the modern world, the elders create the village, protected from the outside world. The creatures are made up to keep the villagers from straying. So, they really can wear red if they want.

These boxes are located on the Paugussett Trail in Shelton. Take either route 111 in Monroe or route 110 in Shelton to East Village Rd. to Longfellow Rd. Take a right onto Dickinson Dr, a left onto Little Fox Run , then a left onto Okenuck Way. Park at the bottom of Okenuck Way. The trail will be on your right.

Box #1 Look for the special trailhead marker—the raised drain with the blue blaze. Be careful of your footing. Leaves, rocks, tree roots and steep hills are not a particularly good mix. Beginning where TRAILMIX’S TOP 3 FAVORITE…HITCHCOCK MOVIES left off, walk until you see a moss covered ledge to your right. Climb up the hill to the tree on top of the ledge. Look at the base of the tree.

Box #2 As you begin to ascend the next hill, notice a large boulder to your left. Now look to your right to see a 3-sister tree. Look in the rotted sister.

Box #3 Travel along the trail passing through a fallen tree and over brooks. Find the tree with the double blue blaze at the intersection with the white trail. Take the white trail to your right. You will hear the waterfall up ahead. Stay on the white along the falls. After seeing a stone fireplace, and staying on the white trail, watch for an old 2-sister birch tree on your left. Look at its base. Remember to watch for the double blue blaze on a 2-sister tree to find your way back.
