The Lyman Legacy is about a 20 minute walk into the Lyman Woods Forest Preserve in Downers Grove. Parking is available at the William F. Sherman, Jr. Interpretive Center. Enter off 31st Street near Highland Ave. You can get pamphlets and a map inside the center or at the information board at the trail head.

The trail begins on the east side of the center. Start walking south down the old pavement road. This trail used to be a residential road in the 1950s. There were homes built within the east Oak Savannah of Lyman Woods. As you walk, notice any openings in the woods where any clearing for homes may have taken place. These areas are slowly being taken back by nature. Do you see any old driveways off the main path?

Follow the trail and notice when it changes from pavement to a gravel and grassy path. Take a moment to pause and look around when you see an interpretive sign with pictures and information about the Lyman Legacy. Continue to go deeper into the past as you walk deeper into the forest. Can you imagine the way nature has transformed and reclaimed this area that used to be a 600 acre farm?

Travel south until you reach a T intersection then take a right. Follow the trail west past the meadow to your left. Picture what this space may have looked like 100 years ago. A dairy operation to the north, agricultural fields, a barn, and out buildings stood here.

After you pass through the meadow, you’ll reenter the woods. Take a right when the trail forks. Pass over the obvious wide driveway. Count out about 30 paces (double steps), starting at the informational board at the driveway. On the left, you will see the foundation of an old building that once stood here. Look on the side of the foundation for the box! Be discrete as you find and replace the box. Enjoy the rest of your hike or continue along the trail to head back to the parking lot.
Thanks for the visit!
