Clues
DAR State Forest, Goshen MA
(Hampshire County)
Distance: 1/4 mile, if that
Time: Under a half hour but enjoy the serenity of the view.
Difficulty: Easy handicapped accessible and child friendly trail.

06/28/08: I adopted, repaired and added a carved stamp to this box today. So residing within are now two lost kittens.
05/08/11: updated the clues. The land marks have changed.

Take Rt 9 West through Northampton into Goshen.
Take the first right after center (very small) onto Rte. 112 North. DAR entrance is about 1/2 mile up on the right. Go down the hill into the park and past the main parking area. Just ahead up around the corner, take a left at the Boat Ramp/Handicapped Trail sign. Park and follow the Handicapped trail. You will pass a Gazebo and keep walking to the warf that will be on your left. While standing in front of the warf, look left to a birch tree.At the birch tree you will be looking out over the lake and directly across from you will be the camper’s beach. From the birch tree, count to the right over three large stones and under the third stone is the kitten. The opening is hidden behind another stone. This may be a busy spot so use care in not getting caught. Be sure the stone covers the opening. I hope the water doesn’t get too high and get the kitty wet. (Please log in your find at letterboxing.org or Atlas Quest.) You can follow the trail into the campground and walk the road back or have a seat on one of the benches and enjoy a lunch. There is also a fire tower further up the main road (which has tremendous amount of blueberry bushes), past the campground, if you'd like to take a peek.

If your feeling adventurous and it is after Labor Day but before Memorial Day, you can return to your car and follow the road out the backside of the park. When you get to the end of the park, go through the gate and go to the end of the road (Ludwig Road) take a left. Just a short ways up the road, you will see Chapel Brook Ledges on your left and Chapel Brook Falls on your right. Both are very nice and guess what...there are two letterboxes to be found (see "IN MY HEART” / “GOOD LUCK” letterbox). If it isn’t between these two holidays, you will need to take an alternate route, as the back park gate will be closed. I have given an alternate route under the other letterbox descriptions
