One of my favorite memories of letterboxing in Texas was my quest for and eventual finding of Gryzzled Gryphon's Original Letterbox. When I first got the clues, all I saw on the page was a bunch of Chicken Scratchin'! I must have puzzled over it for hours before giving up and putting it aside. Occasionally, I would drag it out and agonize over it, but without success. One day I was talking to my brother-in-law, El Lobo, about letterboxing and he mentioned GG's box, and the fact that he hadn't been able to solve it, no matter how hard he tried. Nothing but a bunch of Chicken Scratchin', he said. We lived about 500 miles apart, but we entered a friendly competition to see who could be the first to solve the clues. Weeks passed, maybe months, and then, all that Chicken Scratchin' started to make sense to me and I couldn't put it down until I had it solved. I could finally rest, and forgot about the contest I had with El Lobo. A couple of days later, he called me and the first thing he said was "I did it! I solved Gryzzled Gryphon's mystery box!". Well, what could I say? I just had to congratulate him and tell him that I was sure I was getting close. The next day we jumped in our car and went and found the box. I don't think El Lobo ever did.

Directions:
This box is located in Buescher State Park near Smithville, Texas. From the park, go north on Park Road 1C to the second road that leads to the M. D. Anderson research facility. Find the small parking area on the left just past it. Walk back to the M. D. Anderson road and take the trail to your left.

To the box:
Go to the trail marker at the first "T" and turn left. You'll see a marker with a red square and the number "7". Continue on the trail.
Pass through the Oak Gate.
Continue uphill.
Go down trail that hugs the side of the hill.
Cross the wooden foot bridge.
Pass through the Pine Gate.
Just past, take 3 steps up.
Hairpin left, uphill.
Downhill....duck!
Find the trail marker on the right at the "Tee"
Go left to the dry creek bed.
Go up 3 steps and continue up.
From trail marker on left, take 16 steps to a small pine on the left side of the trail.
Go off-trail left 10 steps to a medium pine tree.
Box is at back of tree under a SPOR.
This walk took me a little over an hour, but I'm older than the dirt the chicken was scratchin' in, so you should be able to make it much faster.
