This is one of our favorite coastal hikes. This hike takes approximately 2 hours round trip, however allow some time to take in the view and search for beach treasures (We found 37 pieces of beach glass on this trip!). Suggested seasons are fall, winter, and spring. The terrain is moderately challenging at times. Head down to Bay Street, Watch Hill, Westerly, RI. Find a parking spot anywhere you can. Walk through the parking lot of the shopping center and over to the Watch Hill Yacht Club(1 Fort Rd.). It will be on your right. Continue to walk down Fort Rd. You will pass a string of beach cabanas on your left and the water on your right. When you get to the fire hydrant, stay to the right along the water. Continue past the first sand path on your left, usually a steep sand dune. Walk along the water a little way until you come to a row of flat rocks. There you will find another path bearing left. Take this path which will bring you to Little Narragansett Bay coast. Travel along with the coast on your right and sand dunes on your left. Here is where you will find many treasures including unique shaped and colored rocks and beach glass…be sure to look up once in a while to enjoy the view. Continue along until you come to two black poles (used for nesting) on your left. At any point here take a walk over the sand dunes on your left to the beach. Once over the dunes take a right and continue traveling down the beach until you come to the rocks. There, to your right you will see a hill. Climb the sand dune to a small clearing. There is a white log there with a pine tree. Look to the left and you will find a skinny path up the hill. This path is quite steep. Note: The terrain here changes and there are several paths to the top of the hill. You may have to search a little. Once at the top of the hill you will be atop Fort Mansfield. This is the most western point in RI. You can see the tip of Long Island on a clear day. Back to finding the box....looking at the fort, move to the first wooden post on the right. Moving along the ropes and posts, count and stop at post 37. Between post 37 and 38 there is a copper colored mat (this is also the third mat you will come to). There is a space under the mat where the letter box is placed on a ledge. Please be careful when taking and returning the box so that it does not fall off the ledge and into the fort. Please place the box exactly where found as we hid this box in a safe to reach place. For the walk back we like walking along the beach side…. Note: the sand dune path at the end of the beach leading you back to the parking lot is usually very steep. Lastly, please let us know if the box is missing as this is a beach area and the weather may move the box. Enjoy beautiful Rhode Island!!!!
