Sharpsburg, Maryland was founded in 1763 by Joseph Chapline. Joseph chose the area for this reason. The "reason" he chose this location is not far from Town Hall. When looking at and facing Town Hall from East Main Street, look to the left of Town Hall and the Public Library. There is an alley. Walk that alley until you come upon the "reason." The reason is called The Great Spring and/or Big Spring. It feeds into Antietam Creek and was the main water source for the small town until the 1960s. Big Spring is protected and adorned by a stone wall topped with cannonballs to symbolize the Battle of Antietam. When facing Big Spring, look up and to the right. You will see a CANnonball and an old fence post. You CAN find our letterbox there... Note: we chose this stamp because our Girl Scout troop hopes to plant the State's flower there this spring. April 2013. Our troop has adopted Big Spring as our annual community service work to help keep it maintained and beautiful. Thank you for visiting...
