This box is hidden at Bosque del Apache NWR, winter home to half a million Sandhill cranes, millions of snow geese and countless other ducks, shorebirds and migratory passerines. From November to March, arrive before dawn to experience the awesome spectacle of the morning fly-out. Believe me, I’m a late sleeper and I’ve gotten up to see this again and again. A small fee is charged but remember, you can buy a Duck Stamp for $15 at your local Post Office which will let you into any National Wildlife Refuge for a year as well as helping to support this great system.

To the trailhead: San Antonio is 90 miles south of Albuquerque on I-25. Exit here and follow the brown signs to the Refuge, another 9 miles south. A quarter mile past the Visitor Center go left and follow the Auto Tour Route on the Farm Loop to the intersection with the road marked “to trails.” Park by the Rio Viejo Trailhead. You can get a trail map here or at the Visitor Center. This trail is a flat, sandy two mile loop with interpretive markers along the way.

To the Letterbox: Stop when you are flanked with great sittin’ logs right and left. One of these has a neighbor standing at its side, a harbinger of misfortune. (the harbinger may be missing but the box was found 11.6.11) Behind the bearer of bad luck stands a row of four medium-sized cottonwoods. Walk to the second in line. Ten steps in a westerly direction will bring you to the letterbox, nestled in a fork.

NOTE: Please do not enter this box into any database. Contact me directly to report on its status.
