From the outside the Painted Churches of Texas look like many American country churches, but cross the threshold and you'll encounter a profusion of color. Built by 19th century immigrants, these churches transport the visitor back to a different era, a different way of life. Inscriptions on the walls read not in English, but in the mother tongue of those who built them: German and Czech. There are over 15 of these churches, most in the Schulenburg area, and they can be visited on your own or by tour. This box honors St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin, a community founded by Wendish immigrants in 1854, and can be found at the Cemetery near the church. The church was open for viewing when I went and the Wendish Museum is worth visiting to learn about these immigrants descended from a group of Slavic tribes that developed a common language but were not allowed to speak it in their native Germany.
Directions:
From Giddings go south on Hwy 77 for 0.3 mile then bear right on FM 448 about 5 miles to FM 2239. Turn right and go 0.5 mile to Serbin, then left on CR 212 for 0.2 mile to St. Paul Lutheran Church, which is just past the Wendish Museum and cemetery. For the letterbox, go back on CR 212 and park by the cemetery on your right near a metal shed.

Walk into the cemetery and go right along the concrete pipes to the far side of the metal shed. Turn left and go 17 steps to a large multi-trunk tree which I think is a Crepe Myrtle. Minibox is within trunks under a rock.
